Personal Loan vs Gold Loan
For a short-term need, a gold loan is usually far cheaper than a personal loan. Compare rates, tenure, credit-score impact and the real risks.
For an urgent, short-term need, these are the two options most Indian households actually weigh. A personal loan is unsecured and priced on your credit profile. A gold loan is secured against jewellery you already own, which makes it cheaper and faster but introduces a risk people consistently underestimate.
Side by side
| Factor | Personal Loan | Gold Loan |
|---|---|---|
| Typical rate | From about 10.5% p.a., often higher | Frequently 9–12% p.a. from banks |
| Credit score requirement | Important — drives approval and pricing | Largely irrelevant; the gold is the security |
| Disbursal | Same day to a week | Often within hours |
| Typical tenure | 1–7 years | 3 months to 3 years |
| Amount | Based on income, up to ₹40 lakh | Up to 75% of the gold value (RBI cap) |
| Risk of default | Credit record damaged; recovery action | Your jewellery is auctioned |
Choose Personal Loan if…
- You need a larger sum than your gold supports
- You want to repay over several years
- You have a strong credit score that earns a competitive rate
Choose Gold Loan if…
- You need money within a day
- Your credit score is weak or you have no credit history
- You are confident of repaying within a year or two
Our view
If you own gold and the need is short-term, a gold loan is usually the cheaper answer, and it does not depend on your credit score. But be clear about the downside: miss the repayments and the jewellery is auctioned, and in most Indian families that jewellery is not a financial asset so much as an irreplaceable one. Never take a gold loan for a repayment plan you are not confident about.
Common questions
How much can I borrow against my gold?
The RBI caps bank lending at 75% of the gold’s value, assessed on the weight and purity of the metal alone. Making charges and stones are excluded, so the valuation is typically well below what you paid.
Is a gold loan from an NBFC safe?
With a regulated, established NBFC, yes — but read the storage terms, the auction notice period and the true annualised cost including charges. Small unregulated lenders are a different matter entirely and are best avoided.
Does a gold loan affect my credit score?
It is reported to the bureaus like any other loan, so timely repayment helps and default hurts. The difference is that approval does not depend on your score in the first place.
